Women Lost in Translation | Overview
Description and Impact
This project works with women prisoners in one of Cusco’s local jails. The inmates range in age from 18 to 60, and have been convicted of a variety of crimes, including drug trafficking and robbery. Although many are Peruvian nationals, a surprising amount are also foreigners whose first language is often not Spanish. Some have been imprisoned for years without contact with the friends and families they left back home.
What is the overall goal of the project? The jail works in coalition with other detention centers in Cusco to progress toward improved methods of re-socialization and reintegration. Part of this movement involves providing an outlet for these women to talk about their experiences, hopes and concerns. Some of the international inmates have little chance to speak in English, so sometimes it simply allows them a chance to use their mother tongue.
