Give the Gift of Clean Water | Overview
Description and Impact
Every year, diarrheal diseases caused by unsafe water are responsible for roughly 1.8 million deaths around the world. Most of these are young children under the age of five. The central goal of ProWorld’s Kantu Ceramic Water Filter Project is to eliminate bacteria and parasites from contaminated water, and make it safe for human consumption. The Kantu is the national flower of Peru, and they often grow near water sources like rivers and streams.
- Health Benefits- Peruvians can drink the filtered water and use it to wash produce without having to worry about contracting viruses and bacterial infections that are common in every household
- Economic Benefits- Use of the filters will make the purchase of commercial bottled water unnecessary. A healthier family means fewer trips to the doctor or hospital for its members. Money saved on medical bills and bottled water can be used towards other necessities.
- Environmental Benefits- Because plastics are not recycled in the Sacred Valley, plastic water bottles are simply discarded as waste, adding to the already growing pollution problem. By filtering their own water, Peruvians can cut down on this waste.
