Equip and Educate People with Hearing Impairments

Description and Impact

One Mexico’s most forgotten group is poor children with disabilities. For these children, overcoming poverty and a disability is a double disadvantage, especially for those with hearing impairments. Not being able to speak or be understood by friends and family leaves them completely helpless and without hope for ever fully assimilating into the community. Often times, people with hearing impairments and other disabilities are viewed by society as worthless and are subsequently extremely marginalized and cast out of daily life. The only full service hearing and language rehabilitation center in southern Mexico, this organization is affiliated with the Alexander Graham Bell institute and has developed three programs that assist auditory and spoken language learning for children ages 1 to 14. With the help of this organization, many children and young people with hearing related disabilities in Mexico are able to receive care.

What is the overall goal of the project? The overall goal of this project is to provide auditory and speech language therapy to children in Southern Mexico with the ultimate goal of helping deaf children learn to communicate within their communities. The organization has developed three programs to assist poor families in the area including a clinic that provides hearing aids and other related services, a school that provides complete auditory and speech rehabilitation services and lastly a social outreach program that identifies people in rural areas who are in need of the organizations services. Through these three programs and your help, the organization is able to reach and serve many!
