A Community Works Better All Together | Overview
Description and Impact
Many of the rural communities outside of Oaxaca are home to low income families with fewer resources than those residing in the nearby city. Those 30 minutes that separate the city of Oaxaca from the more rural outlying towns also signify a separation in opportunities and access to education. This community learning center was established by a community organizer who noticed a great need for collective involvement and educational opportunities for families and children in the area. He realized that by providing these children and adults with the skills and knowledge to move ahead, they would have the tools to support one another and do so themselves. This organization provides low cost English and computer literacy classes, as well as a place for the community to share ideas and spend time together.
What is the overall goal of the project? The overall goal of this project is to empower the members of this community by providing them access to a supplementary education focused upon lucrative life skills like English and computer literacy. The idea behind the organization is that students, both young and old, will come to understand the scope of their potential both within their community and far beyond it.
