Summer in Mexico | Overview
ProWorld Summer Abroad students will take classes in Intensive Spanish and International Studies. Classwork will be balanced by hands-on community development projects, which will be determined by the ProWorld Mexico Site Director.
Oaxaca is located in the southern-most part of Mexico, away from the constant gang violence synonymous with border towns, yet the city still faces massive poverty as one of the poorest states in the country. The lack of available productive jobs compounds the issue, forcing families to employ every member of their family. According to government statistics, about half of the state's children don't finish primary school because they drop out to work with their parents. In addition to job scarcity, access to medicine and healthcare is minimal with state-run health care attending to just 23% of the population.
