Description and Impact
With the vast rise in migration from rural areas of Peru to Cusco over the last three decades, the city has seen a significant increase in the number of cargadores- carriers aging from ten to fifty that transport loads weighing up to 250 lbs on their backs to various points within and without the metropolis. These boys and men come from the poorest class and often struggle to find food and shelter, many taking night’s refuge under the tents of vendors. As effectively invisible members of society, they are ignored and discriminated against by public and private institutions as well as local authorities.
What is the overall goal of the project? With 127 bunk beds, the center serves first and foremost as inexpensive lodging for the cargadores. It also contains shower and personal hygiene facilities, a room for sick and recovering lodgers, a launderette and a storage room. Breakfast and dinner are also provided at a low cost.
The organization seeks not only to provide inexpensive food and shelter for the cargadores, but also to help them better improve their social and economic situation. Thus, the center has formed important partnerships with several educational institutions with the purpose of supporting young student cargadores with their studies. In addition, the inhabitants are encouraged to attend job skills training sessions (the center will pay for half the cost) and assists them in the job search process. Information regarding topics such as self-esteem, alcoholism and sexual education are also available at the center.
