Raise Awareness of Women's Health through Tell-A-Friend | Overview
Description and Impact
This organization understands that for true change to occur there needs to be a self-help mentality throughout the community. Since many women don’t have access to formal educational settings, they rely on each other to convey information. Often times, women in rural communities suffer from a complete lack of information, or even worse, misinformation regarding their sexual health, reproductive choices, nutrition and infant care. This organization aims to help alleviate these problems by educating women who are leaders in their communities, providing the women with information and resources, and helping them to become important informational sources for other women around them.
What is the overall goal of the project?
This community-based NGO works in three different communities, primarily running the Tell-a-Friend Program by assisting initiatives concerning women and at-risk youths’ health, a program which consists of medical and sanitation seminars, family planning and developing community-based health plans. Interns will specifically be involved in the Tell-a-Friend program, which focuses on educating women from remote villages on basic sexual health, hygiene, sanitation, first aid and nutrition. The director of the program selects 5 women from a community and the volunteer will train them on these issues and provide them with materials to study. After these women have become well-versed on the subjects, each will be asked to find 5 more women to share the information with. These new sets of 5 women will each tell 5 of their friends – the pattern will continue. In addition, interns may assist in a rural clinic once a week if desired.
