Provide Health Care and Education to the Poor | Overview
Description and Impact
Although the Brazilian economy is flourishing, many Brazilians have not felt the benefits of industrialization. The gap between rich and poor can be clearly observed in urban areas where a significant portion of the population lives in favelas or shantytowns. Life in the slums is characterized by poverty, violence and disease. People in these areas often lack access to adequate food, shelter, health services, and education. The Brazilian government does not have the resources to eliminate the most extreme forms of poverty, making the work of charities and non-governmental organizations all the more necessary. ProWorld works with a private, philanthropic organization in Salvador that includes a hospital complex and school. Providing health care and education not only addresses two of the most vital needs for low-income individuals, but also gives their children the resources to break out of the vicious cycle of poverty.
What is the overall goal of the project? The overall goal of the project is give Salvador’s poor access to health care and a quality education.
- Health care –This hospital complex provides a full range of health services, to thousands of low-income Brazilians
- Quality Education – This program provides an education and social services to 800 children living in extreme poverty in one of the most improvised parts of Salvador.
