Promote Women's Health | Overview
Description and Impact
While the Thai government provides health to all citizens, there are still siginificant gaps in the care provided, many groups in particular women and children are often not provided the care or treatment that they need. ProWorld Thailand works in partnership with local NGOs that provide healthcare support to these populations. Cervical and breast cancers are the two highest causes of death for Thai women. Furthermore, the Chiang Mai Province has the highest incidence rate of both types of cancer in the entire country. Both cervical cancer and breast cancer can be treated with high survival rates if appropriate screening tests are performed routinely. In partnership with local NGO’s, the public health project also addresses the needs of children with heart conditions and has HIV prevention and education programs.
What is the overall goal of the project?
The overall goal of this project is to reduce mortality from cervical and breast cancer by increasing access to cancer screening and appropriate treatment and to provide basic health services.
- Cancer screening – ProWorld health clinics provide pap smears and administer breast exams to women living in the Saraphi, San Kamphaeng, San Sai, Doi Saket, Hang Dong and San Pa Tong districts.
- Heart operations – the project also preforms heart operations on poor children who would otherwise have no access to health care.
- HIV/AIDS - The ProWorld project provides HIV/AIDs education and prevention outreach programs.
