Preserve Traditional Weaving of Andean Textiles | Overview
Description and Impact
Although traditional Andean weaving has been around since pre-Columbian times, it is now at risk of disappearing completely. As the younger generation becomes absorbed in the modern age, working long days with scarcely a moment’s rest, they find little time to learn the ancient techniques that have been passed down over centuries. Not just the production of these textile goods are in danger of being lost, the very history and traditions behind their fabrication as well.
What is the overall goal of the project? The goal of this project is not only to encourage and assist in the production of these textiles, but also to restore culture that allows this production to continue. The organization seeks to disseminate information about Andean traditional textiles and also to support and collaborate with existing communities of weavers through educational workshops and the sale of traditional textiles produced by the weavers. It works in nine communities in the Cusco region, providing them with a place to weave and fostering the artisanal education of the younger generation.
