Measure the Impact of Ecotourism on the Local Wildlife | Overview
Description and Impact
Encompassing a section of the famous Amazon Rainforest, the Madre de Dios region of Tambopata Peru is an internationally recognized biodiversity hotspot, home to over 12,000 of species of plants. Unfortunately, the area is also being increasingly targeted by illegal gold mining and hunting. As it is both rich in petroleum and carved through by the Trans-Amazonica highway, the region is also subject to expanding deforestation. If the growing amount of logging, mining and gas exploration is not kept in check, the results could be disastrous and irreversible.
What is the overall goal of the project? ProWorld’s community partner in Tambopata is committed not only to monitoring the diverse plant and animal species in the area, but also to assessing what positive social and economic outcomes can be obtained through responsible ecotourism. Besides this, they work to demonstrate the negative effects that irresponsible human actions can have on the rainforest. Their goal is activism through education, and they believe the more people know about their environment, the more likely they are to protect it.
