Keep the Tradition Alive

Description and Impact

Although their culture and rich and storied, indigenous Peruvians are some of the poorest and most disenfranchised members of society. To many, the only bridge out of poverty is migration and assimilation. Unfortunately, this only leads to the decrease in their clout and their ability to maintain their traditions.

What is the overall goal of the project? ProWorld’s community partner strives to both alleviate the extreme poverty in which indigenous Cusco-area communities live and promote the continuation of their centuries-old traditions. Together with the communities themselves, the organization develops methods of successfully maintaining their culture while allowing it to successfully adapt to modern reality. They are also devoted to educating Peruvian communities on sustainable capacity-building through materials and workshops based around various focus areas.  These areas include textiles, organic agriculture, and traditional medicines, among others.  The organization usually does its own research to supports its efforts.
