Advocacy for Environmental Awareness and Prevention of HIV/AIDS | Overview
Description and Impact
This organization understands that for true change to occur there needs to be a self-help mentality throughout the community. There are so many issues that need to be addressed and improved on in the Cape Coast region. These range from disease, poverty and illiteracy rates to a general ignorance of the negative environmental effects people’s actions are having on their communities. This NGO attempts to address all of these using an integrated and holistic approach. Much of their focus centers on the education and empowerment of woman and children.
What is the overall goal of the project? Founded in 2004, this organization wants to improve national development and the negative environmental states that are closely associated with disease (specifically HIV/AIDS), poverty and illiteracy. By organizing workshops, youth forums, campaign programs, peer educator clubs, and self-help initiatives, they take a well-integrated and holistic intervention approach on these issues. A huge issue in the Cape Coast region stems from the common practice of burying or burning ones waste. Garbage treated in this manner releases toxic fumes into both the air and ground soil; eventually contaminating water supplies. A waste and recycling collection system has been set up by this organization to address this problem. They receive a small profit for their efforts which helps support their outreach and educational programs. They currently have trained volunteers in 15 communities surrounding Cape Coast and are planning on extending their efforts to Twifo Praso in the lower Denkyira District.
