Intern in Thai Hospitals and Healthcare Clinics | Overview
Description and Impact
Over half a million people in Thailand are living with HIV. Thailand once led the developing world in HIV prevention, with massive public health campaigns and a 100% condom program. The current financial crisis has placed a burden on the government, and spending on HIV/AIDS has decreased. Local health clinics and district hospitals in Northern Thailand provide crucial health care for the community affected by HIV/AIDS but are often overcrowded and understaffed. In the Sankampaeng district outside of Chiang Mai, ProWorld partners with the local HIV/AIDS clinic and the attached district hospital. Together they provide inpatient care and do a variety of public health outreach work. This health clinic is the primary source of treatment for people living in this sub-district outside of Chiang Mai.
What is the overall goal of the project? The overall goal of this project is to provide HIV/AIDS treatment and health education for people living outside Chiang Mai.
- HIV/AIDS – The clinic provides inpatient care for over 300 people infected with HIV and acts as a support system for the local district.
- Public health education in local schools and temples. The health clinic strives to reach as many members of the community as possible through their education program.
- District Hospital – The clinic is attached to the larger district hospital which provides a wide variety of care for the people of Sankampaeng. Interns with health experience have the option to shadow doctors in the hospital.
