HIV/AIDS Awareness for the Women and Children of Ghana | Overview
Description and Impact
HIV/AIDS infection takes a huge toll on a developing community. A multi-faceted approach is usually the most successful in terms of prevention, education and continuing support for those affected. This project puts the power into the hands of the woman and children of these communities to fight this disease, by helping to mobilize communities and strengthen access to education. Community outreach and education is a huge factor in the level of prevention provided. Equipping peer groups, targeting woman and children, with skills in communication, advocacy, negotiation and assertion raise the visibility and knowledge surrounding this terrible disease.
What is the overall goal of the project? Using communication, advocacy, and training in the fields of health and sanitation, this project equips youth and volunteer community members training and education materials; so that they in turn can help supply their communities with the tools they need to make positive decisions in relation to their health. This NGO was founded in 2001 and has brought this model to over 27 communities in Ghana’s Western, Central, Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra Regions.
