Help Children at the Local Orphanage | Overview
Help Children at the Local Orphanage
Description and Impact
Orphanages in San Jose provide child support to orphans and abandoned children, providing lodging, meals and recreational activities. The orphanages vary in size but work with children who vary in age from 9 months to 12 years old.
Orphanages are run by both Christian organizations and the government and are both overseen by the Children Services office of the Costa Rican government.
- What is the need? Orphanages in San Jose are overcrowded, underfunded, and under-staffed. Even in Costa Rica where the state places a high priority on social services for its citizens, the orphan children lack attention from staff. Volunteers can help these orphan children learn, grow, and become functioning members of society. Caring for orphan children is an extremely fulfilling opportunity for volunteers.
- What is the overall goal of the project? The goal of this project is to provide for the orphan children in San Jose. These young boys and girls live year-round at the orphanage, going to school and playing with other children, but don't have a lot of interaction with the outside world. The children lack attention from caregivers, and volunteers in the past have served a crucial role in the emotional and physical development of these children. As a volunteer, you'll be able to care for the children in meaningful ways and have fun in the process.
