Hands-On Healthcare in Belize | Overview
Meet local health care professionals. Experience clinics and see how a holistic healthcare system works in the rural areas of a developing country. ProWorld’s Hands-on-Healthcare assigns you to community-guided health care projects and gives you an overview of the integrated projects in Belize, with emphasis on rural health clinics, public health education, and integration into Belizean culture through Garifuna drumming, Mayan dancing and local presentations by community leaders as well as amazing adventures and excursions.
You’ll work in to bring health education to villages through community outreach and education. You will work with others in your group to integrate into the Belizean culture and get some real hands-on health exposure and work. Your project placements are based on the site director's assessment and community need.
Public health outreaches and other activities may include:
- Diabetes testing
- High blood pressure testing
- General health discussions
- HIV/AIDS and sexual health education
- Discussion with mothers on the importance of breastfeeding, good nutrition, prevention and treatment of diarrhea
- Planting of garden to promote healthy living
- Tour of a Mayan medicinal medicine trail
Skills and Qualifications recommended for success:
- Experience or education in a health related field
- An openness to learn about different health practices in a new culture
- Etiquette and politeness
- Ability to be flexible, a willingness to learn and build rapport with staff and local healthcare professionals
