Go Down in History

Description and Impact

This ProWorld program partners with an organization of eighteen indigenous and mestizo (people of mixed European and indigenous descent) communities to create cultural museums.  Learn how to identify sources of support for local projects, revitalize traditional dance and music, and develop theatre, radio and video programs as you help a culture document and preserve its history.  This program is also creating a museum training center in Oaxaca to support each museum committee.  Your volunteer program would include:

  • Assisting artisans to create temporary exhibitions
  • Collecting oral histories in indigenous communities
  • Assisting in skills training in local communities
  • Helping in the planning and development of community owned museums

Volunteers need their own computer and camera.  Intermediate Spanish skills required.  This is an excellent opportunity for archaeology, sociology, anthropology, or history students.
