Give the Gift of Literacy

Overall literacy in Peru has dramatically increased in the last 20 years; but, at 82%, it is still second to last of all South American countries.  Children in poor areas lag even further behind.  La Página en la Puerta offers kids access to books and assistance in understanding and reading them.  A library just for kids, this is a place where kids can not only improve their reading skills, but explore the magic of folklore, the logic of a resource manual, or the imaginary trip of science fiction written just for them.

Every afternoon, up to 50 children come to do homework, listen to stories, read books, and play educational games.  You can help children develop critical reading and thinking skills by:

  • Reading books with children individually or in small groups
  • Hosting story-time
  • Helping with homework
  • Playing educational games
  • Assisting the director with grant research and marketing
