Garden-Based Agriculture | Overview
Description and Impact
Eating fresh, organic, local food is both healthy and beneficial for the community and environment. Consumption of local food ensures that fruits and vegetables travel a short distance from farm to plate and supports the farmers who produce them. As organic farming becomes a more popular practice, this project is a contribution towards the effort. Not only is there a necessity for sustainable, local harvest practices, it is also vital that these practices are shared with younger generations. This project combines both practice and theory. Interns will be involved in organic farming and educational outreach in local schools. By teaching the tenets of conservation and community gardening, there is a greater possibility of sustainability for years to come.
What is the overall goal of the project? This project aims to develop community gardens, implement sustainable farming methods, and educate the public on the benefits of doing so. The goal includes both educational and nutritional outreach as well as agricultural research and training.
