Eat What you Grow – Sustainable Farming | Overview
Description and Impact
Rural poverty and the lack of access to opportunity are huge issues throughout Ghana, particularly for widows who lack financial support from a partner. Without economic opportunities, and lacking resources to create opportunities of their own, widows and youth in the communities are left without a chance to work for better lives for themselves and their families.
What is the overall goal of the project? This foundation is a nongovernmental organization based in Cape Coast. The mission is to foster youth participation in governance and development issues in Ghana by building capacities and capabilities, and creating second chances. One of the foundation’s projects is a sustainable organic farming project, created to benefit youth and community members by teaching them new sustainable farming methods as a business. An acre of land is currently being used by a widows’ association located in Eguafo as a way to generate income for themselves and their community. A second acre is being farmed by local underprivileged youth in hope that business skills can be taught and practiced. Vegetables, maize and cassava have been planted on these two acres. Future plans to develop the remaining 13 acres are in progress. The crops are sold in markets in Cape Coast and Takoradi. The proceeds go to the widows’ association and to the youth for their labor, and a percentage goes back into the maintenance of the farm.
