Ease the Road Less Traveled | Overview
Description and Impact
Each year thousands of migrant workers from Central America make their way northward in search of a way make a living in order to feed their families. The journey northward is very dangerous and many of these workers are taken advantage of by gangs, thieves and other criminals. They have nowhere safe to stop and rest along the way and are constantly under pressure to continue moving in an effort avoid dangerous confrontations. For these workers, the danger is especially great as they pass through the southern states of Mexico, including Oaxaca.
What is the overall goal of the project? The goal of this project is to provide a safe haven for migrant workers as they make the hazardous journey northward. The organization not only provides a safe place to stay but also offers guidance and support regarding the risks and consequences of undertaking the trip North. Migrant workers are provided with meals for up to three days (and more if they are sick). As workers pass through the shelter, they are required to participate in a mandatory orientation that covers the risks of being a migrant, their basic human rights, and their obligations. Additionally, the shelter also aims to help Oaxacan families try to find out information on loved ones who have disappeared during their journey to the North.
