Care for the Elderly | Overview
Description and Impact
The Peruvian elderly often find themselves out of luck and with nowhere to go. Some have been abandoned by their families, while others have lived their whole lives on the streets. Although they are some of the country’s neediest residents, many are maltreated and ignored.
What is the overall goal of the project? ProWorld’s community partner is a home that provides free care for elderly individuals who are no longer able to care for themselves. The home has been in existence for over 25 years, and is run by the Sisters of San Francisco de Asis. Among the population are mentally handicapped patients, sufferers of dementia and Alzheimer's disease, and some patients who have simply become unable to walk, eat, or complete other basic functions independently. The patients speak Quechua and Spanish, and men and women reside in separate buildings. The center is currently home to over 240 residents. In addition to providing sleeping quarters and meals, the center encompasses a health clinic, a laundry room, a dental center, and a physical therapy clinic.
