Morocco
Overview
Located at a crossroads between the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, and Western Europe, modern Morocco reflects the diverse array of cultures and peoples who have made it their home. From the Tamazight (Berber) languages still spoken by many inhabitants, to the Roman ruins dotting the landscape in the North and the university, mosques, and tombs which date back as far as the 9th century, Morocco wears its history on its sleeve. The landscape is just as varied and beautiful, ranging from lush farmers’ fields to the rocky peaks of the Atlas Mountains, the soothing beaches of the Mediterranean coast, and the vast sands of the Sahara in the South.
Notoriously social and hospitable, the Moroccan people are quick to invite visitors in for a glass of mint tea and some of their culinary delights – most famously a savory tajine and a celebratory bowl of couscous. For those interested in Arabic, French, or post-colonial societies, Morocco provides an excellent opportunity to explore these topics in a safe and open environment.
Social and Development Issues
Morocco is a quickly changing country, and many of the larger cities rival the level of development found in Europe. However, poverty, coupled with lack of education and economic opportunity is widespread in the more rural regions. Although large steps have been made in recent years, illiteracy is widespread amongst women, and many lack control over their own livelihoods. In addition to the disparity in wealth and income between urban and rural areas, many people in the countryside lack access to healthcare and medical screening.
