India
Overview
With mountains, jungles, deserts and beaches, India is a multidimensional hotspot! Being a land of contrasting and diverse cultures, it has beautiful forts and palaces- many of them being world renowned and figure in the list of world heritage sites. Bounded by the Himalayas in the north, it stretches south to the Tropic of Cancer, tapers off into the Indian Ocean between the Bay of Bengal on the east and the Arabian Sea on the west. With 28 ethnically diverse states, each with its own music, dance, architecture, and food, India is a wild eclectic cocktail. Home to over a billion people, India is the second most populous country in the world, the largest democracy, and the birthplace of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.
Udaipur
Known as the “Venice of the East” for its waterways and distinctive temples and palaces, this beautiful Rajasthan capital is a bustling city with both panache and poverty. Mewari is the most prevalent language, but you’ll also hear Hindi and English. Plan your visit in February and celebrate Holi, when Indians welcome spring by throwing colorful powder on one another.
Social and Development Issues
Over the past 15 years, India has relaxed controls over foreign investment, resulting in widespread economic growth. Currently the twelfth largest economy in the world, India is second in growth and population only to China. In spite of this prosperity, the disparity between haves and have-nots is getting bigger. India is home to high levels of illiteracy and malnutrition, especially among women, as well as and environmental exploitation.
One quarter of the country’s population earns less than 15-20 rupees per day (US$.40-.50).
