Costa Rica

Choose a Location » Costa Rica

Overview

Costa Rica or "rich coast" in English, boasts a warm climate, pristine beaches on the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean, as well as tropical forests and mountains. Due to its political stability, warm and hospitable hosts, natural beauty and rich biodiversity, it is easy to see why it is often ranked as one of the most visited international eco-tourism destinations.

Costa Rica is a democratic republic; with high levels of environmental development, tourism is the most important industry.  Located in Central America, the country shares borders with Nicaragua on the north and Panama on the southeast.

Social and Development Issues

Explosive population growth, rapid development, and the transition from an agricultural to a tourism and technology-based economy are obstacles to preserving the natural resources that make this country special.

Communities in Costa Rica,  however, have organized to create grassroots development solutions to managing preserved areas in such a way that has socio-economic benefits for local residents. ProWorld’s field-based approach allows you to customize a balance between cultural immersion in the local community; in Atenas, you can see the relationship and balance between parks and people, witness the impact of expanded eco-tourism first-hand, or even just explore the mythic landscape at Monteverde’s Cloud Forest.
